Born in 1923, during the period when Singapore was under British rule, Lee Kuan Yew is widely recognized as the founding father of independent Singapore. After graduating in law from Cambridge University, he formed the People’s Action Party in 1954, and became the first Prime Minister of Singapore, governing for 30 years. Then, he served as Senior Minister and subsequently as Minister Mentor, for a total of 56 years in successive ministerial positions. With his passing in 2015, he has left a legacy behind with his contribution in transforming the colonial city to a first-world nation, which has prompted international admiration.
Since 1998 he has published a set of memoirs, The Singapore Story and From Third World to First: The Singapore Story detailing his personal accounts on the history of Singapore, including the separation from Malaysia and the subsequent transformation of a developed country. Drawing on his insight and experience, he published a few more books and shed light on a range of topics on Singapore and the world including politics, governance, foreign affairs and society.
