The Rubik’s Cube is considered to be the world’s best-selling puzzle game, and yet its creation did not initially start out as a toy. Invented by Erno Rubik in 1974, the Hungarian architect wanted a working model as a teaching tool to help demonstrate three-dimensional geometry. After designing the Magic Cube as he had named it, he noticed he had created a puzzle when he tried to restore the coloured squares of the cube. When it later debut in toy fairs, it was renamed to Rubik's Cube and became an international sensation upon its worldwide release.
The cube is made up of nine coloured squares on each side, and there are 42 quintillion possibilities to arrange it. However, there is only one correct solution. As people were mesmerised by the puzzle, there were also “speedcubing” competitions where participants aim to solve the cube in the shortest time possible and get into the official world records. With a simple design yet fascinating to decipher, millions of the cubes have been sold worldwide as it captured everyone’s full attention and appealed to the young and old.
