Akashi is a brand of whiskey produced by the White Oak/ Eigashima Shuzo distillery in Akashi, Japan. The Eigashima Shuzo distillery is renowned for being the first to attain a whiskey-making license in Japan, and for its long history. Although the corporation was established in 1679, it only started producing saké and barley shōchū in 1888 and received its distilling license in 1919.
As a Japanese whiskey, Akashi shares the most similarity with Scotch whiskey and is usually consumed in cocktails when blended, although it can also be drunk straight. Like many other Japanese whiskeys, hot or cold water can be added to Akashi whiskeys and drunk during winter and summer. Akashi whiskeys are commonly drunk as an accompaniment to food during meals due to their delicate scents and sweet flavours. While Akashi is not the most well known Japanese whiskey brand, it is a must-try for anyone that prefers the light and smooth blend that Japanese whiskeys are known for having.
