First produced in 1976, Ron Zacapa Centenario is a brand of premium rum that was created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Zacapa, Guatemala. The creator was Alejandro Burgaleta, a doctor and chemist that oversaw the blending, stabilisation and maturation process of the rums. Zacapa’s rums have received worldwide recognition at the International Rum Festival, winning first place in the premium rums category for four consecutive years from 1998 to 2001.
The Zacapa rum is made from local sugarcane honey that is later fermented using pineapple yeast and then distilled in a column still lined with copper. For the ageing process, the rum is stored in a variety of casks, from ex-bourbon casks to casks that used to contain Pedro Ximenez sherry. The resulting rum is incredibly dark and can be drunk neat, delighting rum drinkers with its rich and sweet flavours. Its distinctive solera system creates the excellent flavours of roasted coffee, vanilla and dark chocolate, and butterscotch that can be found in Zacapa rums.
