The Fontanafredda estate was first purchased in 1858 by Vittoria Emanuele II who was the first king of Italy, whose goal was to simply manufacture exquisite Barolo for his own use. In 1878, the wine brand was only properly established by Count Emanuele Alberto of Mirafiori and officially began operations by mass-producing the collection of premium wines. By then, Fontanafredda had made a name for itself and became one of the leading wine brands in Barolo wine.
