With the long Diwali break coming up, have you planned where you’re travelling to? We have compiled a list of three countries in Asia that make for the perfect getaway destinations to visit during the long October weekend. Of course, we’ve also included a list of travel essentials to bring with you to make your short getaway even more epic!
Famous for its stunning landscapes, well-preserved ruins, and breathtaking beaches, Vietnam is a long-slithering country that borders Laos, Cambodia, and China. If you’re planning on travelling to Vietnam, visiting several of its UNESCO World Heritage sites is a must-add to your travel bucket list. Bask in the beauty of the emerald waters and limestone karsts of Hạ Long Bay in the Quảng Ninh province. You could even go on a cruise, experience the beauty of nature, and marvel at the dynamics of the local fishing villages near this stunning UNESCO World Heritage site. The ancient town of Hội An in the Quảng Nam Province was a major port from the 16th to 18th centuries. Exceptionally well-preserved to this day, you can explore this ancient town on foot that is filled with a mixture of European and Asian cultures. Another province in Vietnam worth visiting is Huế. One of the country’s most historic towns, this Imperial City sits along the banks of the beautiful Perfume River. Though devastated by the Battle of Huế, it is still filled with fascinating temples, palaces, and tombs, which can all be explored in a day trip.
Want to taste authentic Vietnamese food while on your short trip there? Go on a gastronomic adventure and try some of the country’s most popular dishes. Try the Phở, a Vietnamese noodle soup consisting of flat rice noodles, herbs and flavourings, and beef or chicken. Gỏi Cuốn is Vietnamese spring rolls made from rice noodles, fresh greens, shrimp, and pork, wrapped in rice paper and plated with a peanut dipping sauce. Have a fill of authentic Bánh mì or the Vietnamese equivalent of the French baguette. It is a filling sandwich consisting of Vietnamese sausages, pork liver pâté, cucumber slices, shredded carrots and radish, mayonnaise, and chilli.
Travel Tip: If you’re planning to visit Vietnam and enjoy its “Timeless Charm” in October, it’s best to bring travel essentials such as comfortable shoes and clothes. Sporadic rainfall may occur in October but it’s still a great time to enjoy the country’s tourist sites and attractions.
Indonesia's most visited travel destinations include its natural attractions. Bali is often first on the list of tourists travelling to the country. The Tegallalang Rice Terraces is one of Ubud's most scenic attractions. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a perfect place to hike and enjoy the wonders of nature. If you wish to see unique architecture and breathtaking views, visit the infamous Uluwatu Temple. Want to try surfing? Bali boasts some of the best waves in the world. Visited by surf hobbyists and professional surfers from all over the globe, there's no denying that the surf breaks in Bali are world-class.
What's a trip to Indonesia without tasting its cuisine? Try authentic satay or meat skewers served with peanut sauce and rice cakes. It's the country's most celebrated dish that originated from street vendors. Beef Rendang is also a must-try Indonesian dish. Known for its spicy and rich flavours, it is similar to beef curry but without broth. Finally, Indonesia's national food, the Nasi Goreng, doesn't need any introduction. This revered Indonesian fried rice has captivated the world because of its versatility and plethora of vegetables, beef, chicken, seafood, and more!
Travel Tip: Time to discover “Wonderful Indonesia” this October! If you can’t get enough of the thrill and excitement of travelling to Indonesia, we also recommend visiting this wonderful country in July to August as the weather is dry but it is still refreshing and welcoming.
Thailand has impressive natural features that attract tourists from around the globe. When it comes to Thai food, Pad Kra Pao is the go-to dish for locals when they are unsure what to eat. It’s a stir-fried minced pork and rice dish you can eat anytime. Kway Teow is a noodle soup that is a local and tourist favourite. This noodle soup dish is made with rice noodles, offal, pork tenderloin, minced meat, vegetables, and fish balls.
