QUINTA DO NOVAL LBV SINGLE VINEYARD
Porto DOC, Douro, Portugal
92 points - Wine Enthusiast
The Quinta do Noval Late Bottle Vintage Single Vineyard Unfiltered is a remarkable example of the Noval style. Treated exactly like a Vintage Port with only noble grape varieties from the Quinta, trodden by foot and unfiltered. Its main difference is that it is aged for five years in casks instead of the two years typical of Vintage Ports, giving it the ""Late Bottled Vintage"" name. Longer maturing in casks helps provide a smoother wine and gives it its very approachable style, ready to drink as soon as it is bottled.
Definitely an LBV with a difference, with fine structured tannins, great freshness and purity of fruit. It is delicious to drink today but will age beautifully in its bottle.
All the grapes - a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão - come from the Quinta do Noval vineyard, in Pinhão - the heart of the Douro valley. The wine matures 5 years in oak casks instead of 2 years for a Classic Vintage.
One of the oldest port houses, Quinta do Noval is also arguably the greatest. Since 1715, Quinta do Noval has developed a reputation of being an innovative producer, unique in that most of its ports are made from estate-grown fruit. All vintage Noval ports are sourced from the single Quinta do Noval vineyard, resulting in vintage ports that are among the world’s finest, and harmonious expressions of the individual character of this great vineyard terroir
