Folklore and Herbal Heritage
Herbalists throughout the age shave used Clary sage to treat digestive disorders, kidney diseases, respiratory infections, and sore throats. It cooled and calmed inflammation and brought relief for abscesses, skin disorders, swelling, and wounds. The herb was a common remedy for female complaints.
Clary sage derives its name from the Latin clarus, meaning "clear,” and was famous for its ability to clear eye problems such as tired or strained eyes or blurred vision. In fact, its nickname during the Middle Ages was clear eyes. Other names were Christ's eye and Ramona. Germans called it muscatel sage due to its similarity in taste to muscatel wine. Some wine merchants adulterated cheap wines with clary sage to impart the taste of the more expensive muscatel wine. Clary sage also substituted for hops in brewing beer. When added to or taken with any alcoholic beverage, Clarysage tends to exaggerate drunkenness and increases the discomfort of the hangover that follows. 

Medicinal uses
Clary sage oil possesses many of the same attributes and healing properties of common sage oil, Salvia officinalis, which often has skin irritating or toxic side effects. Clary sage makes a safer choice for aromatherapy. It is an all-around tonic and is especially useful for toning the liver and kidneys.

From May to September, the clary sage plant displays hardy whorls of pale blue, purple, or pink blossoms atop long spikes. Heart-shaped green leaves with soft and fuzzy crinkled surfaces surround the flowers. This stout biennial or perennial is a member of the Lamiaceae family and attains a height of three to five feet.
Steam distillation of the flowering tops and leaves of Salvia sclare yields a colourless or pale yellowish-green oil. The aroma of clary sage oil is sweet, fresh, and clean, with warm, herblike, nutty, and balsamic undertones.
Native to southern France, Italy, and Syria Clary sage is now cultivated worldwide, especially in Mediterranean climates, central Europe, England, Morocco, Russia, and the United States. Superior oils come from England, France, and Morocco.

Precautions
Clary sage oil should be avoided during pregnancy because of its ability to stimulate aggerate the effects of alcohol and intensify drunkenness and hangovers. It can also cause drowsiness.
