For centuries, geraniums have adorned window boxes, walkways, gardens, and homes around the world with splashes of brilliant red, lavender, pink, and white blossoms. Both the showey flowers and serrated edged leaves of there tender perennial plants can emit delightful fragrances. Dutch sailors transported geraniums to Europe from Africa during the 1600s. Europeans appreciated them for their delightful fragrance and their adaptability to the European climate. Many gardeners planted geraniums to ensure that no evil spirit would enter their homes.

Of the more than 700 varieties of geranium, only a few: Pelargonium roseum, Pelargonium graveolent, Pelargonium odorantissimum and Pelargonium radula produce essential oils. The entire plant, including leaves, stalks, and flowers is steam- distilled to produce a pale greenish-yellow oil with a sweet scent that is sometimes rosy, sometimes minty.
