About Bowmore

Founded in 1779, Bowmore is the oldest distillery on Islay. Bowmore's No. 1 Vaults is one of the oldest maturation warehouses for Scotch whisky in the world. Our handcrafted single malt whisky is matured here, where it is nurtured by time. Bowmore is inevitably shaped by time, and we are the bearers of time's power, crafting Bowmore single malt whisky through the passage of time.

The distillery adheres to traditional production methods to ensure that every product embodies the distinctive fruity and smoky characteristics of Bowmore single malt whisky. To this day, Bowmore is one of the few distilleries still practicing floor malting. We manually turn the malt using traditional wooden malt shovels and simple tools. The water used to make our whisky is sourced from the Laggan River, rich in peat flavor, and the peat used during the malting process is extracted from the peat bogs along the river's path.

The distillery's coastal location also plays a significant role in determining the final characteristics of the whisky, imparting a unique maritime flavor. The legendary "Bowmore No. 1 Vaults" lie below sea level. The thick walls of the vaults provide a constant, cool temperature, rich with the scent of the sea, creating a maturation environment that contrasts with the crashing waves outside, resulting in Bowmore's exceptional single malt whisky over generations.

Bowmore uses ex-Bourbon barrels, ex-Sherry casks, and ex-Wine casks for maturation, which over time develop a rich and full-bodied flavor. The whisky is carefully nurtured in oak barrels until the moment it is bottled. Bowmore single malt whisky is a unique blend of peat, barley, sea air, water, and woody flavors. The commitment to traditional craftsmanship and the preservation of original flavors is steadfast.
