HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE BRUICHLADDICH?

It is Brook-Laddie. We also affectionately call ourselves The Laddie.

WHAT DOES BRUICHLADDICH MEAN?

Bruichladdich – Brudhach a Chladdaich – is made from two Gaelic words. Brudhach refers to the unusual bank, while ‘A Chladdaich’ intersects the bank at the place of the dangerous, rocky, lee shore. The steep bank at the rocky lee-shore.

Bruichladdich is usually translated rather poetically as 'brae by the shore'.

DOES BRUICHLADDICH USE COLOURING IN ITS WHISKY?

No. Bruichladdich whiskies are natural, the colour being obtained exclusively from the oak of the casks in which the whisky was matured. New oak casks and barrels that recently contained a dark wine, such as some Sherries, induce darker brown shades in whisky; while oak casks that once contained red wines, such as Madeira, Port, Banyuls or Bordeaux, will impart a red-brown tint.

At Bruichladdich we NEVER use E150. E150, or caramel colour, is used by most distillers for colour stabilisation. It allows a distiller to obtain a regular colour for each product, every time, regardless of the age, type or style of cask that the whisky was matured in.

CAN YOU HAVE AN UNPEATED ISLAY WHISKY?

It's a common perception that all Islay whisky is peated, and all peated whisky is Islay. This is not the case. There is no Islay appellation defining the style of whisky produced here. Today, between 30 to 50% of spirit distilled on Islay is unpeated. Nor is peated whisky the sole prerogative of Islay.

Islay has remained a peat stronghold by default. Firstly, for geographic reasons. In the 19th century the island’s inaccessibility made it too costly to upgrade to coal, like everyone on the mainland. Secondly, for blending. A little peated spirit goes a long way in a blend.

Bruichladdich is an unpeated whisky. However, we also distil some exceptional peated whisky, and this is now sold exclusively under either the Port Charlotte or Octomore labels.

WHAT IS PEAT?

Peat is found in the acidic and waterlogged ground of bogs and fens. The anaerobic nature of such environments prevents the total decomposition of the plants that grow there. These are mostly mosses, especially of the genus Sphagnum. A compressed, partially decomposed wodge of organic matter builds up over time – this is peat.

It takes nature about a century to make five centimetres of it. The younger the peat, the paler it is in colour and the more water it holds. As peat ages, it turns a darker brown and its carbon content increases, constituting an intermediate stage in the formation of coal. This high carbon content makes mature peat a useful fuel.

WHAT IS CHILL-FILTRATION?

At Bruichladdich we do not chill-filter any of our whisky. Chill-filtration is an industrial process designed primarily to remove esters in whisky. These flavour compounds can form hazes and deposits when stored at low temperature. Ethyl esters can be reduced by refrigeration followed by pumping through a plaque filtration system – the process known as of chill-filtration. Whilst some esters are relatively minor influences on whisky flavour, chill- filtration also removes more flavour critical components, as well as fatty acids that count for the richer ‘mouth feel’ and ‘persistence’ of flavour.

HOW TO ENJOY BRUICHLADDICH SINGLE MALT WHISKY?

You are welcome to taste them neat, however we recommend that our single malts are best enjoyed with the addition of extra still spring water to release the natural aromas and reduce the strength to your preferred level according to mood. This may well be around 40% ABV – or less.

Our whiskies are bottled here on Islay. They are all bottled naturally, free from colouring and chill-filtration, for extra flavour and texture. Where necessary, our whiskies are reduced to 50% with Islay spring water prior to bottling. This is about 25% more alcohol per bottle than a standard strength whisky.
