How is bourbon different from other American whiskeys?
Bourbon whiskey is a type of American whiskey that must meet specific criteria: (1) it must be made from a mash bill (grain mixture) containing at least 51% corn; (2) it must be aged in new, charred oak barrels; (3) it must be distilled to no more than 160 proof; (4) it must be entered into the barrel for ageing at no more than 125 proof; and (5) it must be bottled at no less than 80 proof. This results in bourbon’s distinctive sweet, full-bodied flavour with caramel and vanilla notes.
Other types of American whiskey, such as rye, wheat, corn, and Tennessee whiskey, have different mash bill requirements and production methods, resulting in their own unique flavour profiles.
