Full flavoured and rich with a deep mouth-coating texture, the taste is an intriguing balance between sweet, spicy and deep smoky flavours. The flavour is initially sweet. A burst of winter spices sets off a smoky-spicy explosion countered by a sumptuous mid-palate of honey glazed smoked food and chewy treacle. Waves of deep smoky tones and rich aromas build up on the palate like a fine Montecristo cigar.

Rich and weighty with heady and smoky aromatics. At full strength, the initial aroma is a beguiling mix of warm Christmas cake, walnut oil and parma violets fused with fresh ocean spice, cedar and pine needles falling from the Christmas tree. A smouldering coal fire and the scent of well-oiled leather brings warmth. The sweetness of treacle toffees and chocolate-coated raisins emerge through the smoke. With water, the deep smokiness increases in intensity, reminiscent of a fired Christmas pudding. Rich flowering currants and warm baked banana and walnut bread are served with simmering mocha espresso.

The nose presents a strong current of smoke upfront, one that mixes creosote with burning peat. Balancing this peat grenade are notes of raisins, brown sugar and malty graininess. It’s not as big and bold a scent as a 54.2% ABV might suggest, and without even a hint of harsh alcohol, but is instead balanced and structured.<br><br>On the palate, the silky liquid is briefly sweet, a mix of malty honey and fresh fruit, but this is swamped by a wave of peat (no creosote here, but just out and out peat) and a peppery note. Not nearly as balanced as the scent, the sipping experience is one where a gentle step leads into a full-on peat bomb experience. The finish, however, rights the scales, and the presence of both smoke and brown sugar sweetness lingers on and on.

Ardbeg Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery in Ardbeg on the south coast of the isle of Islay, Argyll and Bute, Scotland, in the Inner Hebrides group of islands. The distillery is owned by Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy, and produces a heavily peated Islay whisky. The distillery uses malted barley sourced from the maltings in Port Ellen.The Ardbeg distillery has been producing whisky since 1798, and began commercial production in 1815. Like most Scottish distilleries, for most of its history, its whisky was produced for use in blended whisky, rather than as a single malt.
