Martell is a brand of cognac, which is a type of distilled spirit made from specific types of grapes grown in the Cognac region of France. Cognac must follow strict production regulations, including ageing in oak barrels, to be considered authentic.
Martell can be enjoyed neat, or with a splash of water to release its flavours and aromas. It can also be used in cocktails or mixed drinks; mix Martell VS with triple sec, lemon juice and orange peel to make the classic Sidecar, or bring out the Martell Blue Swift and combine it with sugar cane syrup, Jefferson bitters, cherry garnish and orange peel to prepare the Old Fashioned. The best way to drink Martell ultimately depends on personal preference, but it's important to savour it slowly to fully appreciate the cognac’s fine complexity.
Martell XO (Extra Old) cognac is generally considered to be of higher quality than Martell VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale) cognac, as it has been aged for a longer period (at least 10 years for XO and at least four years for VSOP). Martell XO also has a more complex and refined flavour profile. However, personal preference plays a significant role in determining which one is better.
